If you're a hard-core surfer -- or just want to look like one -- head to Bird's Surf Shop. Although Miami doesn't regularly get huge swells, if you're here during the winter and one should happen to hit, you'll be ready. The shop carries more than 150 boards. Call its surf line (tel. 305/947-7170) to find the best waves from South Beach to Cape Hatteras and even the Bahamas and Florida's West Coast.
Also, Sunday is the Paddle out for Bird. Haulover Beach Jetty. Bring your own food. 12:00 is the time. We'll see you there.
Thanksgiving’s over. Hurricane season’s done. But the winter surfing holiday’s just begun. Keep your eyes on Surfline for coverage from the past week and forecasts for more systems to come. And if that’s not enough of a feast, dig into the Vans Triple Crown and our Hawaii coverage where CJ Hobgood, Sterling Spencer and Ben Bourgeois are already getting into the spirit by handing out turkeys in Honolulu.
Join Billabong and Digital Wunderland for the "Beyond The Barrier" East Coast movie tour: Dec. 5, Da Kine Diego’s, Melbourne; Dec. 6, Beachside Tavern, New Smyrna; and Dec. 7, Papagallo’s, St. Augustine. Check the sites for band details and check a clip here.
Also this weekend, Volcom’s VQS Seacow Series strikes Sebastian Inlet. For status, check the site or call 949-646-2175x.6302.
But first, on Dec. 4, PBC Surfrider is holding their “Respect the Beach” Party and fundraiser with raffle and silent auction items, plus they will be presenting the Palm Beach County Chapter's four "Ocean Warrior Awards” to Kane Baker, Ed Tichenor, Don French and Jay Cashmere. Check the site for prizes, location and dress details. (Also look for news on judge's ruling on the legal battle to save surfing at the Lake Worth Pier.)
2ndlight.com has all the Brevard County shop sale and party deets, including Balsa Bill’s Christmas party on Dec. 6, featuring the Surf Chasers and Sounds of Aloha.
On Dec. 7, the next ESA PBC contest will go down in Jupiter; get your entry in by 5pm, Dec. 3. (Backup date is the weekend of Dec. 13/14th.) Get your entry forms are on the site at Ocean Magic, or your local Palm Beach County Surf Shop.
Also that weekend, ESA CFL will hold contest number 5 at Cocoa Beach pier, First Coast Surfrider will hold contest number 3 at a location TBA on Dec. 7. And ESA NCFL will hold their last comp of the season at Tom Renick Park on Dec. 6. Treasure Coast ESA will throw down Dec. 7. Check the respective sites for details.
And the NSSA Southeast Conference will battle at Ocean Ave in Mel Beach Dec. 6-7. (Backup date of Dec. 13-14.)
On Dec. 8 First Coast Surfrider will meet at Finn MacCool’s in Jax Beach; starts at 7pm.
Finally, our apologies to Brian Bowen for spelled his name wrong in the Jupiter Fall Classic last week; he was the Sr. Longboard champ.
The national election’s done, but another political fight is only beginning. With Congress lifting the ban on offshore drilling , now’s the time to contact your Senators and State Reps and tell them it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum.
And, finally, what’s the best part of a surf trip? That giant excess baggage fee the airlines pork you with on both sides, right? Wrong! Well, stop bitching and do something by signing this petition.
