Bad news: Virginia still wants to drill offshore, potentially polluting the whole Mid-Atlantic and setting a nasty precedent for every coastal state to follow. Good news: you have another week to spout off since the MMS extended the public comment period to Jan. 13. Tell them ‘no way.’ Tell your Senators and State Reps it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum. Tell your friends to do the same. Then go to Surf-First after your next session and tell them everything they need to know to help keep oil rigs off our coast -- and tar off our beaches -- forever. Look for the competition to get slick starting next week when the O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro presented by Ron Jon, runs Jan. 12-18, gathering the world’s best surfers for the first WQS of the season. The Collegiate Surfing Association will also host its inaugural regional college surfing championships at the SI Pro on Sunday, Jan. 11. Partnering with the Eastern Surfing Association, the CSA will host a Mid-Atlantic regional collegiate championship in late spring in conjunction with the ESA’s Scholastic Championships, open to college surf teams from Maine to Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico. Parties interested in becoming involved with the CSA or individual college surf teams can email the directors. Act fast SC activists! Grand Strand Surfrider meets Monday, Jan. 5, from 6:30 to 8pm at Balsa Bill’s Surf and Coffee shop. On Jan. 6, in Wrightsville Beach, the UNCW Surf Club and the WB Christian Surfers will be showing an episode of On Surfari in Russia at the Lumina Theater. Starts at 7pm. Admission is free and Shayne McIntyre, Matt Beacham and Nic McLean will all be speaking after the movie. (If you can’t make the show, get your Beacham fix with Surfline’s insider look at New Pollution.) And Jan. 7, Charleston Surfrider will meet at Reds Ice House in Mt. Pleasant, SC at 6:30pm. The VA ESA will hold their end of the season party at the Jewish Mother on Jan. 11 from ?5:30 to 8:00 pm. And on Jan. 14, DC Surfrider will meet at the meeting space of the DC Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC, near Dupont Circle.?? (1777 Church Street NW) Starts at 6:45pm. Word on SurfKDH.com is 17th Street Surf Shop has resigned Buxton local Brett Barley and Virginia Beach's Philip Gould. Two of the most talented surfers on the East Coast. Brett and Philip will be heading to Florida next week to get the 2009 season underway at the WQS 4 Star O’Neill Pro. ? Not everyone can be a pro surfer, that’s why God invented college. Go to WB Live Surf to read about the 2009 Wrightsville Beach Longboarders Association Scholarship for two local student-surfers. Any ESA NSC competitors who surfed the Cold Water Contest in March need to contact Terry immediately; there are some questions over event they need to clear up to assign regional slots. And don’t forget: the crew at 158 Surf and Skate in Kitty Hawk, NC need your signatures on their petition to have a indoor skatepark. Click here to help. So the New Year’s been slow surf-wise for the East Coast. Relive the best vid clips of 2008 -- including Cory Lopez reeling from Africa to Hatteras -- then enjoy the Outer Banks best 2008 memories, with this spot-check starring Jesse Hines and Noah Snyder, with photos by Mickey McCarthy, Matt Lusk and Eddie Compo. If all else fails, you can count on...
