Surfline's LOLA Swell Model is the ONLY global swell model that can separate individual swells to accurately calculate surf heights for any location on Earth. Every surf spot will only have a limited range of swells that produce good surf at that location. Compare the LOLA swell forecast with a spot's "Optimal Conditions" information and your own local knowledge to score the best surf.
The "Swell Rose" above is the only one of it's kind in the world. This shows the directions of all the incoming swells
(N=0° East=90° etc). If you mouse over the swell rose you can see detailed raw numbers of the underlying swells.
US Weather data comes from the WeatherUnderground array of personal weather stations. Data is near realtime. International weather comes from LOLAs high resolution models or WUG where possible.
Tides are generated using the most excellent Xtide system.

Bad news: Virginia still wants to drill offshore, potentially polluting the whole Mid-Atlantic and setting a nasty precedent for every coastal state to follow. Good news: you have another week to spout off since the MMS extended the public comment period to Jan. 13. Tell them ‘no way.’ Tell your Senators and State Reps it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum. Tell your friends to do the same. Then go to Surf-First after your next session and tell them everything they need to know to help keep oil rigs off our coast -- and tar off our beaches -- forever.
Look for the competition to get slick starting next week when the O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro presented by Ron Jon, runs Jan. 12-18, gathering the world’s best surfers for the first WQS of the season. The Collegiate Surfing Association will also host its inaugural regional college surfing championships at the SI Pro on Sunday, Jan. 11. Partnering with the Eastern Surfing Association, the CSA will host a Mid-Atlantic regional collegiate championship in late spring in conjunction with the ESA’s Scholastic Championships, open to college surf teams from Maine to Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico. Parties interested in becoming involved with the CSA or individual college surf teams can email the directors.
Back home, the Surfrider meetings are stacking up. On Jan. 10, the Jersey Shore Chapter will meet at Fins Tropicali Grill in Bradley Beach at 9am.
On Jan. 12 Surfrider Central Long Island will meet at the Babylon Town Annex at 7:30pm. Topics will include: LNG Island and related commercial industrialization projects ; beach access; and the Rise Above Plastics campaign.
Surfrider NYC meets Jan. 14 from 6:45 to 8:00pm, upstairs at the Inn; 7 Ninth Avenue at Little West 12th Street.
And on Jan. 17, South Jersey Surfrider will meet at Rojo's Tacos, 6th St. & Ocean Ave., Ocean City. Starts at 10am.
We're sad to report that on December 30, Mark Tesi and Julie Goldstein and the team at PINE surf shop and art gallery in Ship Bottom lost everything due to a fire. Not only the surf inventory but a huge amount of their original artwork. The LBI surf and art community is planning a possible benefit for them in the near future. Check LocalSwell.com for more info.
