If you are thinking about a trip to the North Shore this winter, and would like to polish up your technique or talents, you may want to visit the SunsetSuratt Surf School. "Uncle Brian" Suratt has been teaching and coaching for over 40 years and has helped hundreds of wave riders take their surfing to the next level. For more info, or to book a session in Hawaii, contact: http://www.sunsetsurattsurfschool.com/ The North Shore circus is officially in full swing, drawing the world’s top surfing tightrope walkers, beast-tamers, freaks and clowns. For proof, just check Surfline’s latest weekly report , where NJ’s Ryan Miller followed East Coasters around during a down day. Zander Morton and Gabe Kling watched TV, while Brian Toth, CJ Hobgood and Ben Bourgeois played tennis. Come on, guys: get back in the water! Don’t you realize it’s winter back home?! Hey, as long as you’re locked in doors, you might as well help save the ocean. On Nov. 18, join Rhode Island Surfrider from 6 to 7:30pm. This month's get-together will feature a slideshow from a semester abroad in Brisbane, Australia that Travis and Jesse (the two Brown surf club presidents) took in spring of 2008. Go to Salomon 202, on the Main Green at Brown University. The meeting will be on the second floor; walk into the two front doors of Salomon and head off to the left to access the stairs. On Nov. 29, Surfrider Mass. will host the Surfrider/Naukabout Paddle & Plunge?at Craigsville Beach, Cape Cod. to promote the Rise Above Plastics Campaign. Join them at 1pm for hot coffee on the beach from Beanstock Coffee Roasters of Wellfleet then jump in headfirst at the water 1:45pm. There will also be an after party at the Island Merchant restaurant with hot coffee, eats, beer, local music a surf film and a raffle for prizes provided by the Boardwise surf shop, Surfrider, and Naukabout. Proceeds will benefit the MA chapter and campaign. Click here for more. You didn’t have to force ESA-NNE competitors to hop in the water this past weekend as they once again got waves for a contest. Stay tuned to the site for results from the last two comps and details on upcoming events. Meanwhile, down in Narragansett, the same huge offshore system kicked up some overhead rollers for the ESA Holiday Surfabout, the final rated contest of the season. Congrats to the following winners: Matt Nota (Boys/Menehune Longboard); Mya Kotalac (Girls); Ross Ahlborg (Junior Men); Colin Cook (Men); Nick Carter (Masters); Chuck Barend (Senior Men/Open/Master Longboard); Ana Barend (Senior Women/Senior Women Longboard); Peter Pan (Legends); Pat Redmond (Open Bodyboard); James McGraghan (Junior Longboard); Peter Pan (Legends Longboard). Grain Surfboards has a slew of recent news to report. Besides teaming up with eco-friendly accessories company Wave Tribe to offer a free hemp boardbag with every kit, they’ve collaborated with 7-time world champion Layne Beachley to develop a new ‘fun-gun.’ And perhaps most importantly, they’re continuing their weeklong workshops with the first dates set for Jan. 25-31. Cost is $1,575 and you walk away with a new board, ready to glass. Check the site for future dates and to reserve your spot. The national election’s done, but another political fight is only beginning. With Congress lifting the ban on offshore drilling , now’s the time to contact your Senators and State Reps and tell them it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum. And, finally, what’s the best part of a surf trip? That giant excess baggage fee the airlines pork you with on both sides, right? Wrong! Well, stop bitching and do something by signing this petition.
