Bad news: Virginia still wants to drill offshore, potentially polluting the whole Mid-Atlantic and setting a nasty precedent for every coastal state to follow. Good news: you have another week to spout off since the MMS extended the public comment period to Jan. 13. Tell them ‘no way.’ Tell your Senators and State Reps it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum. Tell your friends to do the same. Then go to Surf-First after your next session and tell them everything they need to know to help keep oil rigs off our coast -- and tar off our beaches -- forever. Look for the competition to get slick starting next week when the O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro presented by Ron Jon, runs Jan. 12-18, gathering the world’s best surfers for the first WQS of the season. The Collegiate Surfing Association will also host its inaugural regional college surfing championships at the SI Pro on Sunday, Jan. 11. Partnering with the Eastern Surfing Association, the CSA will host a Mid-Atlantic regional collegiate championship in late spring in conjunction with the ESA’s Scholastic Championships, open to college surf teams from Maine to Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico. Parties interested in becoming involved with the CSA or individual college surf teams can email the directors. Back home in New England, Mass. Surfrider will meet Jan. 7 at Wainwright Bank - Community Room,?250 Elm Street in ?Somerville. Meetings begin at 6:30 pm. Check in to find out more about this month’s upcoming movie night and the annual Snowrider event later this winter. NESurf.com is holding the full run of Clean Ocean Access activities. Starting Jan. 7, at Easton’ Point Pub, you can buy tickets for COA’s Annual Slideshow and fundraiser set to run on Jan. 23. Cost is $10 for four bands, one DJ, seven or more photogs and merchandise from over 11 surf companies. (Check the site for details.) And Jan. 10, Coastal Cleanup #1 will take place Third Beach in Middletown RI from 10am to noon. And while you’re there, check Peter Pan’s Year in Review, covering all 2008’s ups and down’s from ESA standouts to industry trends. Word from Newport’s Sid Abruzzi is Waterbros will have its first booth ever at Surf Expo in Orlando, Jan. 14 – 17. The WB will be showing a new line of goods, including brand new boardshorts -- plus vintage shortboards and skate decks. And Connecticut Surfrider is planning a Snowrider event at a local mountain for February. Contact them with questions and suggestions. So the New Year’s been slow surf-wise for the East Coast. Relive the best vid clips of 2008 -- including Cory Lopez reeling from Africa to Hatteras -- then enjoy the Outer Banks; best 2008 memories with this spot-check starring Jesse Hines and Noah Snyder. If all else fails, you can count on Fuel TV to keep you stoked, starting Monday, Jan. 12, with coverage of CJ’s victory and Slater’s ninth title win at the Billabong Pro Mundaka. Then, on Jan. 15, join Shayne and Shannon McIntyre as they explore Nicaragua and visit the friendly humanitarian crew of East Coast ex-pats. And, finally, what’s the best part of a surf trip? That giant excess baggage fee the airlines pork you with on both sides, right? Wrong! Well, stop bitching and do something by signing this petition.
